Introduction to the Sport of Rugby

Rugby, at present, is one of the most exciting contact sports. Rugby is like football in that it is a hard-hitting physical game, and at the same time it is like soccer in that it is a game of speed and movement.

When you look at the size and shape of a rugby ball, you will almost think that it is a football. Comparing the size of rugby balls and footballs, one can say that a rugby ball is larger than a football. Laces no longer come with the modern version of the rugby ball. There are mandatory and options personal equipment that a rugby player need like a mouthpiece, which is mandatory, and a soft-padded head gear, which is optional.

The ‘pitch’ is the playing field of the rugby game. This is a large grassy surface which measure 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. Uprights are positioned on every end of the ruby field. Behind the uprights is the goals area. The minimum depth of the goal area is 10 meters but it is often 22 meters.

Two teams are represented in the pitch who will play the game. Each team consist of fifteen players. The teams are further broken up into two separate groupings called the pack and the backs. The pack players have jerseys with numbers from one to eight. The large, physical players of the team are placed in the pack group. The jersey’s with numbers from nine to fifteen constitute the backs which is made up of the fastest team players.

The objective of the game is to score goals which are known as “try.” You can achieve a try by touching the ball down inside your opponent’s end zone. There is no particular player that can carry the ball to the zone to make a score. You earn 5 points if you scored a try. When a player makes a try, he is then awarded a conversion kick. Two points are added to the team score if the conversion kick is good.

You can also score points through a drop goal. Your team gets three points through a drop goal. If the ball is kicked through the uprights of the opposing team then you have a drop goal. The ball has to make contact with the ground before you kick it, to count as a drop goal.

If there are fouls on players, penalty kicks are also granted. A penalty kick is worth three points if it is a good one. The player kicks the ball freely on the site where the foul was committed and behind the 22 meter line.

At present, there are many professional levels of rugby. Cities have their own rugby teams, similar to pro football teams in different states. Most popular among the rugby games are those played internationally. Different countries make up international players whose players are taken from the city teams. People are now learning to enjoy international rugby games.
